Mads Mikkelsen has sung the praises of Johnny Depp and suggested the Hollywood star could reprise his role of Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

"I’m a big fan of Johnny," the Danish actor said, as per Deadline.

"I think he’s an amazing actor, I think he did a fantastic job."

Mikkelsen added that Depp may take up the Elder Wand once again in future Fantastic Beasts projects after he won his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

"Obviously, well, now the course has changed - [Depp] won the suit, the court [case] - so let’s see if he comes back. He might," Mikklesen told Deadline.

Depp was forced to step aside from his role in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore due to his then-ongoing court case with ex-wife Amber Heard.

After weeks of testimony from witnesses including both Depp and Heard, a jury largely sided with Depp and awarded him $10.4 million (£8.59m) in damages. Heard won part of her countersuit and was awarded $2m (£1.65m).

Heard's team have since applied to appeal the verdict in the wake of Depp's defamation win.

Warner Bros

Although Mikkelsen didn't have much more to say on Depp taking back the reins in the next Fantastic Beasts flick, he did reveal he had concerns when initially taking over the villainous role.

"It was very intimidating,” Mikkelsen said, as per Deadline.

"There was no way I could just copy [Depp's portrayal of dark wizard Grindelwald], because it’s so much him. It would be creative suicide."

Mikklesen added: So, we had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me."

The star said it was a big leap considering the Pirates of the Caribbean star's incredibly devoted fan base.

Warner Bros

"His fans were very, very sweet, but they were also very stubborn," Mikklesen told Deadline.

"I didn’t interact too much with them, but I could understand why they had their hearts broken."

Depp's fans threw a hissy fit shortly after the first trailer of Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore was released.

They took to social media to call for a boycott of the film, causing #BoycottFantasticBeasts to trend on Twitter after the trailer dropped.

People also hopped on the boycott campaign to say fans shouldn't support the movie because of its association to J.K. Rowling.
