Netflix has announced that Top Boy is returning for another season.

Confirming the news on Twitter, the streaming site wrote: "Confirmed: Top Boy s2 is happening!! What we can tell you: - production starts this spring - Dushane, Sully, Jamie and Shelley will return (!)"

And if that wasn't enough, they also posted a snap of the script for the new series on social media.

This exciting development comes just a few weeks after the show's producer Drake revealed the gritty drama would be back on our screens later this year.

The 33-year-old was responding to an Instagram post which praised the show for being named one of Netflix's most popular shows of 2019.

The caption said: "Will we see a new series in 2020?"

And not wanting to leave the public waiting in suspense until an official announcement was made, the singer jumped in, writing: "Of course."

Originally broadcast on Channel 4 in 2011, the programme followed a group of characters living on a fictional housing estate in Hackney, east London, homing in on a group of residents who were involved in drug dealing and gangs.

Billed as an 'honest look' at inner-city gang culture, the first season was a hit with viewers, meaning a second followed two years later.

Netflix has announced the new series of Top Boy is on its way.

Both series then also found a renewed fan base when they became available on Netflix, which led to the streaming service commissioning it for another series.

Last year, Ashley Walters, who plays Dushane, confirmed that a script was in the works and he was looking forward to continuing the story.

Speaking to the Metro, he said: "Fingers crossed, we haven't had the actual green light yet but it's looking promising.

"In preparation for that we've already been working out storylines and writing so it's looking good. Obviously I won't give anything away but it's looking dope and we're all looking forward to going again with the show."

Looking back at the success of the third instalment, the actor said he wished they had gone back to back with a fourth.

He added: "It had a huge impact and I'm quite sad we didn't film two seasons at once because if we do go again, these people are going to have to wait quite a while again which is going to be difficult."

Well, looks like it will be sooner than you thought, Ashley.
