Matilda was a favourite childhood movie for many millennials, whether they were mesmerised by those perfect pancakes, horrified by the playground pig tail spinning or impressed by Bruce Bogtrotter's performance when it came to wolfing down a big dirty chocolate cake.
The idea of a follow-up was toyed with at the time, but it's been so long since the original movie was released (1996?! That can't be right...) that it seems to have been put on the back-burner. Luckily, Danny DeVito has other ideas - it seems he has ideas for a sequel.
The actor (who played Harry Wormwood) spoke to ComicBook.com during the press junket for Jumanji: The Next Level and said: "I always wanted to do Matilda 2, but when the kid was still a kid."

You may have noted the past tense - Mara Wilson, who played Matilda in the movie, is now 32 years old. But wait for it...
Seventy-five-year-old DeVito, who produced and directed the fantasy film as well as starring in it, added: "But that was like 20 years ago, 25 years ago. Maybe Matilda has a kid and we can do something that, I don't know."
Call me optimistic but this is positive, right? I mean, the guy's practically got a film synopsis on his hands here.
A sequel would certainly be an opportunity to bring back the likes of not only Matilda but also little Lavender - maybe they could both have their own children who go on their own adventures. You take it from there, Danny...

Lavender was the kid that pranked the school's evil principal, Agatha Trunchbull, by putting a newt into her water - and also hid with Matilda from the terrifying teacher as she was handing out detentions left right and centre.
Incidentally, the actor who played Lavender has turned 30. How old does that make you feel now then?
Stepping aside from the inevitability of the ageing process, Kiami Davael (who played Lavender) never forgot her roots. She regularly shares pictures of appreciation that people have sent to her of their kids (or themselves) in 'Lavender' fancy dress. Usually as adorable as she was way back when.

And she's still pretty much BFFs with Mara Wilson. Who, as we mentioned, has also grown up since the film was released. Who would've guessed?
OK, so Danny DeVito is up for it. What are we all waiting for? Come on, guys. Make this movie happen.
