The dog who played Summer, Bran Stark's direwolf, in the first few seasons of Game of Thrones has died after a battle with cancer, his owner has revealed.

Odin, who was an Inuit dog, was 10 years old and had been unwell since November last year. His owner William Mulhall said the beloved pet had died of mouth cancer in Northern Ireland.

On his Instagram page, Mulhall wrote: "Our family are at immense heartbreak to announce that Odin passed away early this morning.

"Odin was a family member first and we got him when he was a pup at 7 weeks old. All we wanted were big dogs to take hiking and to sleep at our feet in the evening beside the fire, everything after that was a bonus."

Odin appeared as a puppy in the very first episode of the show playing Summer - the direwolf pup given to Bran Stark - alongside Thor, another dog owned by Mulhall, who played Grey Wind.

Mulhall's emotional social media post continued: "It's an incredible piece of luck to have a pet you love so well become world famous and touch so many people's hearts.

"He was always fond of the beach and his favourite treats which he had almost every day before his passing.

"He was met with further illness as the week continued and the vets did everything they could to keep him going, but he passed away in his sleep."

In the show, which finished after eight seasons last year, the direwolf is the sigil of House Stark, the rulers of the northern part of Westeros.

In the first ever episode of Game of Thrones a direwolf mother is discovered dead, but leaving behind six puppies, which are given to each of the Stark children and Jon Snow.

Over the course of the show, most of them meet gruesome ends, with the only exceptions being Snow's pet Ghost, who managed to survive the whole thing, and Arya's dog Nymeria, who was released into the wild and - we have to assume - managed to steer clear of the whole thing.

Summer was killed in the show while trying to defend Bran from the wights, white walkers and the Night King himself after they manage to infiltrate the cave of the Three Eyed Raven.

If you're not a Game of Thrones fan, that might not mean a lot to you, but - then again - you did read an entire article about a show you've never seen, didn't you?
