James Martin has hit back at viewers after they slammed him for failing to abide by the government-implemented rules regarding social distancing when filming his Saturday Morning cooking programme:

Posting a video on to social media, the 47-year-old said: "Hi everyone, obviously I'm following the advice that everybody should be following and that is staying at home and staying safe.

"We wanted to put on a show as normal - this was filmed before the new rules came out so hopefully you will enjoy today's show and above all else stay safe and look after yourselves.

"Hopefully this will inspire you to get cooking in the kitchen. Bye for now."

This message came after fans criticised the TV chef's programme, which aired yesterday morning (28 March), as the guests, Coronation Street's Beverley Callard and fellow chef Nick Nairn were not keeping a two metre distance between them.

Martin and Nick shook hands on the PRE-RECORDED show.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer wrote: "Sad to see you guys not listening to the social distancing advice," while another added: "Does social distancing apply to tv shows? James Martin Saturday Morning they're sitting on each other's lap."

Some people were quick to shut down those not recognising that the show was filmed some time ago as one commented: "Lots of clowns on here chiding the CLEARLY PRE-RECORDED James Martin show for not observing the social distancing guidance. Jeez. BTW the yorkshire puddings looked fantastic!"

Another defended the programme, writing: "People complaining don't understand when TV is recorded ages ago. These people are also know as f**kwits. Same peeps probably have a living room full of big roll and pasta."

Alongside his video defending the show, Martin wrote: "Wow what abuse is out there .. if those lot got up at 9.30 and heard this first .. we recorded 7 shows way back before any of these rules came out .. and we where due to film this weekend and of course followed all the government advice and stopped and stayed home ..stay safe all". You tell 'em.

The government guidelines have been put in place to tackle the coronavirus pandemic that's sweeping the nation. At the beginning of the week (23 March), Boris Johnson put the country on lockdown for three weeks before contracting the disease himself.
