Joker star Joaquin Phoenix strolled down the Golden Globes red carpet away from his fiancée Rooney Mara so he could take a second to admire her. Pretty cute, eh?

The star, who scooped the Best Actor gong for his role in comic book origin story Joker, attended the awards on Sunday evening alongside Mara, but instead of posing up a storm in front of the cameras like many celebrity couples, Phoenix took a step back and gazed lovingly at his other half.

The 45-year-old actor held one hand to his face, as though as he could hardly believe his eyes, while looking at Mara who was stood posing for the paps.

When Mara spotted what he was doing and started to laugh, covering her mouth with her hand, before turning to her fella and grinning back.

Mara, 34, wasn't up for any awards this time around, but has previously received nominations for her roles in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Carol.

However, it was a good night for Phoenix, who gave a sweary speech after winning the Best Actor award.

Phoenix, who has previously slated award ceremonies, told the audience: "There is no f****** best actor."

Prompting NBC to quickly cut the audio for viewers at home.

But the actor certainly wasn't unappreciative of the win, adding: "Thank you so much for putting up with me. I'm so grateful for this night and all of you, thank you."

Vegan Phoenix also praised the awards for putting on a plant-based menu, he thanked the organisers for 'recognising and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change'.

With many of his fellow winners using their acceptance speeches to make political - or environmental - points, Phoenix joined in, saying: "I have not always been a virtuous man. I'm learning so much - so many of you in this room have given me multiple opportunities to get it right."

He continued: "It's great to vote but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives. I hope that we can do that - we don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs sometimes or back, please. I'll try to do better and I hope you will too."
