Netflix Has Renewed The Crown For A Sixth And Final Season

Netflix Has Renewed The Crown For A Sixth And Final Season

Netflix has been kind enough to give us one more season of the critically acclaimed show that delves into the life and times of Queen Elizabeth II and the British Royal family.

There was only meant to be five seasons of The Crown, however the show makers have explained that in order to tell the story properly, they will need one more instalment.

It was announced in January this year that they were going to cut the series from the six planned seasons to five.

Creator and executive producer Peter Morgan said at the time: "Now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop. I'm grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision."

That decision has since been flipped after they were trying to squeeze in all the juicy goodness that happened to the British Royal family in the 1990s.

That covers Prince Charles and Princess Diana's relationship, Prince Andrew's marriage to Sarah Ferguson falling apart, the fire at Windsor Castle and, of course, the death of Princess Diana.

Morgan released a new statement, saying: "Series six will not bring us any closer to present day - it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.

Better Call Saul Has Been Renewed For A Sixth And Final Season

"As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.

Netflix added: "So to summarise - we'll have one more season with Queen Olivia Colman, before she passes the crown to Imelda Staunton. We're just half way through! Lovely."

This will allow the series to also explore what happened in the early 2000s decade - which brought with it the deaths of both Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother in 2002.

It will also be able to show young Prince Harry and William dealing with their mother's death.

Oscar-nominated actress Lesley Manville will play Princess Margaret in season five, taking over the role portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter and Vanessa Kirby.

But this is very far in the future as we were only treated with season three last year and no release date has been set for the fourth.

Emma Corrin will play Princess Diana and Gillian Anderson will portray Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
