After his performances in Line of Duty, a load of people online want to see Martin Compston - who plays Detective Inspector Steve Arnott - take on the role of another of England's finest lawmen, Agent 007 James Bond.

Of course, Compston is about as Scottish as they get, but being Scottish or Irish has never stopped anyone from playing James Bond before - just ask Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan.

Anyway, it's an outside shout, given that basically every actor within a certain age range has been tipped for the role, but with Line of Duty currently dominating the UK's telly talk, Compston would surely make a popular appointment.

After watching the most recent episode of BBC One's bent-cop-a-thon, one person said: "What a fantastic episode! Great work sir. Metro Goldwyn Mayor should be taking notes for candidates for the next Bond after this..."

Another commented: "[Martin Compston] for the next Bond!

"No, I'm not kidding. Awesome shootout, mate. This scene kept me jumping up and down in my seat, I was so nervous. Never thought I would need a Xanax so badly. Jeez..."

A third said: "Best ep of LOD ever just keeps getting better and better best TV series ever @martin_compston needs to be the next James bond amazing show tonight roll on ep 5 next Sunday really excited now."

So, he's definitely got the public onside. Well, those of them who watch Line of Duty, anyway.

In case you're wondering what you can get in the betting markets for the next James Bond, Bridgerton star Rege-Jean Page is currently the shortest odds with some bookies, but there are a number of very big names involved.

Tom Hardy, James Norton - remember McMafia? - and The Witcher star Henry Cavill are also good shouts, if you're having a fiver on it.

Idris Elba would be a popular choice too, but he tends to sit a bit further out with the bookies.

If you really wanted a flutter, you can get 50/1 odds on Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as 80/1 on Thandie Newton.

Right down at the very bottom are candidates like Margot Robbie at 500/1 or Emily Blunt at the same odds.

Failing that, you can get 1,000/1 on Colin Firth, who must be pretty disappointed with that.
