If you were strolling around Blackfriars Bridge in London this afternoon, you wouldn't be alone in thinking something was amiss. You might have even seen a man in all black clothing running along the rooftop of the bridge.

That was, in fact, American actor Tom Cruise filming stunt scenes for the upcoming Mission: Impossible 6 movie.

Traffic was reportedly brought to a 'standstill' as the 55-year-old raced across the top of the bridge while a helicopter followed him. Cruise is well known for performing his own stunts (as well as that whole Scientology thing) and it's clear that the sixth instalment for the M:I franchise is no exception.

At one point, Tom gave the good people a cheeky wave and then went back to sprinting towards a helicopter.

The film is due for release in late July this year with Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Michelle Monaghan, Alec Baldwin and Sean Harris all returning after appearances in previous films.

London isn't the only place where the cast and crew have been so far; they've also filmed in India, New Zealand and Norway, with a Norwegian cliff being shut off to the public for nine consecutive days.

While the last five movies have largely revolved around the same plot sequence, we've been promised this one will be different. Writer-director Christopher McQuarrie told Empire: "I've seen five of these movies and I don't know who Ethan Hunt is.

"One movie sort of dealt with his personal life; the other movies are about people speculating what's really going on in Ethan's head. I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it.

"So I put Ethan in a bunch of complicated moral quandaries, and I'm trying to find ways to connect them -- and then, ironically, the way to connect them was through giant action scenes."

Unfortunately for Tom, one of those scenes saw production halted for seven weeks. Cruise was in London in August and tried to leap from one building to another, but misjudged the jump and crashed into a wall.

He was wearing ropes attached to a crane, so he didn't plummet to his death. But he did break his ankle and suffered a few other minor injuries.

So if you were around Blackfriars Bridge for the filming today, you might want to check out the film to see if your mug made the cut.
