Police in the US were called to a property following a report of a woman screaming - however, it turned out the woman in question, was in fact a parrot.

Home security footage shows a man - who has not been named - doing a little work on his wife's car just before New Year's Eve in Lake Worth Beach, Florida.

All the while, cries of 'help!' and 'let me out!' can be heard in the background, but the man pays no attention to the screeching until four police officers arrive at his drive and tell him that a neighbour had reported hearing the sound of a woman screaming emanating from his home.

Clearly aware of what had caused the mix up, the man smirks before telling officers he will 'bring out the screamer'.

The officers can then be seen laughing with relief as the man reemerges from behind his gate with a green parrot perched on his arm and says: "Rambo, meet the boys in green."

All's well that ends well, eh?

Police were relieved and amused by the cause of the screaming.

Reflecting on the incident, Rambo's owner said: "I was changing the brakes on my wife's car and had my 40-year-old parrot, Rambo, on his outside perch where he sings and talks.

"Sometime later, four police officers showed up saying a neighbour called because she heard a woman screaming for help. I promptly introduced the officers to Rambo and we all had a good laugh."

The man also took Rambo around to visit the neighbour too, to put her mind at rest.

He said: "Afterward, I also introduced Rambo to the neighbour who called in the screaming. She too had a good laugh."

But while it seems the guy did nothing wrong here, he does in fact shoulder some of the blame. That's because rather than teaching Rambo how to say something typically parroty, such as 'hello' or 'Polly/Rambo want a cracker', he taught his old feathered friend to shout alarming things like 'help'.

He explained: "Sometimes Rambo yells 'help, help, let me out.' Something I taught him when I was a kid and Rambo lived in a cage."

Well, he may have alarmed a neighbour and wasted police time, but ultimately his cries for help did get him let out in the end. But maybe parrot owner's the world over should think twice before teaching their bird to scream distressing words like 'HEEEEEELP'.
