A tourist has been left with serious injuries after being attacked by a wild brown bear during an adventure tour.

Natalya K, 43, had been asleep in her tent in eastern Russia when she was attacked by the wild animal.

The bear is said to have climbed into the tent and dragged the woman out, before tearing her scalp and causing injuries to her back, including 'deep wounds' and fractures.

Natalya's screams could be heard by other campers also staying in the volcanic region of Kamchatka, who were able to scare the brown bear away and get her to safety.

In footage from the scene, a torn tent and Natalya's belongings are visible on the ground. It also shows the group’s attempt to scare the bear, as the tour guide can be heard shouting: “Go, go, go! Get out of here, out!”

A medic was able to provide some emergency treatment to Natalya, who is from the Russian city of Saratov, and she has now been rushed to hospital for emergency surgery and has also been injected with vaccines for rabies and tetanus.

She is currently fighting for her life in intensive care following the devastating injuries.

Bears are native to around 22 countries across Europe, and Russia is estimated to have the largest brown bear population in the world, with an estimated 120,000.

According to Bear Conservation, in Kamchatka, there are between 10-15,000 brown bears.

"People visit Kamchatka for two reasons, volcanoes and bears. Kamchatka has both in greater abundance than anywhere else in the world," says Destination Wildlife.

Meanwhile, Romania has the largest population of the animal outside of European Russia, with reports suggesting there could be as many as 13,000 bears roaming through mountainous regions.

Earlier this month, a tourist who posed for a selfie with a bear cub in Romania was mauled to death just a day later.

Just a day before the fatal attack, Zin had taken photos and videos of bears while travelling along the picturesque region in central Arges region and posted them on social media.

"Here's the bear," he can be heard saying in the video, adding: "How beautiful. It's coming towards me."

Zin had also shared a photo of himself smiling and pointing to one of the bears on the side of the road.

According to various reports, Zin had returned to the area the following day where he is allegedly encountered a female bear and her cubs at the side of the road.

Romanian authorities have since confirmed the bear has been put down.
