A British man has died in a paragliding accident in Portugal.

A local called 999 after they saw a paraglider plunge to the ground near a nature spot in Lisbon.

Emergency services, including firefighters, launched a search for the man who was found in an 'area of difficult access'.

The man had already gone into cardiac arrest by the time emergency services were able to reach him.

He was assisted by medical experts but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened in an area known as Vale Bom in the municipality of Cadaval, which is near the Montejunto Mountains an hour north of Lisbon, which is known for its sleepy villages and wineries.

The man has yet to be named and it’s not yet known whether he lived in Portugal or was a tourist.

According to the Mirror, there is an unconfirmed report that the man may have been practicing powered paragliding, also known as paramotoring, where the pilot wears a backpack motor which provides enough thrust to take off using a paraglider.

A full investigation into the accident is currently underway.

This is the second paragliding death this week.

Former Scottish rugby international Greig Oliver died in a paragliding accident in South Africa earlier in the week.

The 58-year-old is believed to have drowned on Monday after hitting rocks following a mid-air collision.

Oliver was a passenger on a tandem flight overlooking the coast of Cape Town.

Rescue swimmers from the National Sea Rescue Institute and paramedics attempted to save the former rugby star but were unable to revive him with CPR.

"The tandem passenger, a 58-year-old man, was on rocks in the water off-shore of the Sea Point Promenade,” the Institute said in a statement.

"Despite extensive CPR efforts he was sadly declared deceased by paramedics."

Oliver was in South Africa to support his son and the Ireland squad during the World Rugby U20 Championships.
