A huge crash on the M6 motorway involving three lorries has left one man dead and two others injured.

The crash occurred at around 07:50 on the northbound carriageway near Wigan in the north west of England, between Junction 25 for Bryn and Junction 26 for Orrell interchange.

One of the HGV drivers involved in the collision was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

North West Ambulance Service said the other two drivers were treated but escaped serious injury.

The driver's age has not been released, but Merseyside Police are working to find out his identity so his next of kin can be informed. His age has yet to be released.

Three junctions of the northbound carriageway are currently closed between Junction 23 and Junction 26.

There's a significant amount of queuing traffic still on the motorway extending up to Junction 22 for Newton-le-Willows.

Anyone with information that may be helpful to the investigation is urged to call 0151 777 5747 or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

This is the second major incident on the M6 on Wednesday after three lanes of the M6 were closed earlier today following an incident on the southbound carriageway between Junction 7 for Great Barr and Junction 6 for the Aston Expressway.

Seven cars were involved in the collision and the Air Ambulance is at the scene. One lane of the southbound M6 remains open but there are significant amounts of queuing vehicles passing the scene of the event.

Three people have been treated for injuries, with two taken to hospital.
