Eleven people have been taken to hospital after an open grill barbeque was used inside a home in Tasmania.

The state's Department of Health has released a statement, saying more than half of the affected people are in a serious condition.

"Eleven people were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital early this morning suffering carbon monoxide poisoning after an open charcoal grill was used inside," the statement said.

"Four Ambulance Tasmania units attended a 000 call about 2.30am and paramedics treated patients at the scene before transporting them to the RHH from a house in South Hobart.

"Two adults and five children are currently in a serious condition. Four other children are being monitored.

"The children range in age from two months to 17 years."
