Police have launched an investigation into the death of adult film star Dahlia Sky.

The 31-year-old's body was found inside a car in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley and authorities are treating it as a suspected suicide at the moment.

LAPD detective Dave Peteque told AVN that suicide is 'what the investigation is leaning towards, and there's no evidence at this time that there's any foul play'.

The Sun reports Ms Sky's body was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound.

The autopsy results are yet to be confirmed from the LA County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Owner of JHP Films, Hans, was heartbroken by the news and told AVN he's devastated by her life being cut short.

"During her last year I spoke to her several times about life. It was not an easy ride for her," he said.

"This will take a long time to get over, if it's even possible. Dahlia Sky, you beautiful soul, you funny, complicated and warm-hearted friend! I am going to miss you so much."

Performers, directors and fans have reacted in shock at the news.

Stormy Daniels wrote on Twitter: "I had the opportunity to direct many many talented performers during my time with Wicked.

"Dahlia Sky was one of my absolute favorites. She was also a friend. I am heartbroken to hear of her passing. She is the third death I've learned of in the last 24 hours. Life is so fragile."

Phoenix Askani said: "I have not really known what to say about Dahlia Sky. She was a kind, sweet, energetic soul and so much fun. Her loss is felt by so many and she is missed."

Director Glenn King added: "I'm really sad today about the passing of Dahlia Sky. I remember the day we shot her for a movie, how everyone on set enjoyed being around her. RIP Dahlia."

The discovery of her body comes after the 31-year-old explained to her followers on social media that she was battling terminal cancer.

She expressed gratitude to a friend for letting her stay with them while she was fighting the Stage 4 diagnosis.

While her name at the time of her death was Dahlia Sky, she made her debut in the adult film industry in 2010 under the moniker Bailey Blue.

She was forced to change it in 2014 after a clothing company trademarked it and sent her a cease and desist letter.

Dahlia racked up an impressive career before her death, having been crowned Female Performer of the Year in 2014 and starred in more than 600 films.

She also received nine nominations for her role in the film Bailey Blue Wide Open.
