Apple has pulled off another successful iPhone launch event and it came with all the usual dazzling hype.

The iPhone 12 has been promised as Apple's strongest mobile device yet and it will come with 5G capabilities and the company's new A14 Bionic chip.

Four new models were unveiled by CEO Tim Cook, which include the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Apple said the new phones will feature the brightest display ever and the screen is also set to be 'tougher than any smartphone glass'. It will be equipped with technology called 'Ceramic Shield', which gives them four times the chance of surviving without cracking.

The iPhone 12 and 12 Mini will have a dual-lens setup on the rear camera, which will be able to shoot photos in standard and ultra-wide. Night Mode will also now be available on the ultrawide and front-facing cameras. The Pro model will have a LiDAR sensor, which will improve capabilities for Augmented Reality and allow the camera to auto-focus faster.

However, it can't be all fun and games without some depressing news.

As part of Apple's aims to have net-zero carbon emissions across all product lines, it announced the new models won't come with a power adapter or headphones, with just a USB-C to Lightning cable included in the box.

It will mean fewer raw materials will be needed for each iPhone and the box will be smaller, which means 70 per cent more units can fit on a single shipping pallet and reduce carbon emissions.

Confirming that the new models will be the first to feature 5G for iPhone, Cook referred to the news as 'the most exciting step yet'.

"The next generation is here today," he said. "We're bringing 5G for iPhone. This is a huge moment for all of us and we're really excited."

Telstra's logo was shown on the screen during the big announcement in Apple Park in Cupertino, California, however it's not clear whether other Australian telcos will be able to offer 5G.

Prices will start at $1,199 and will go up to $2,369 for the most expensive and largest capacity iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 Mini starts at $1,199, the iPhone 12 starts at $1,349, the iPhone 12 Pro is $1,699, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max begins at $1,849.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will start in Australia at Apple and telcos from this Friday, with the devices going on sale the following week on Friday October 23. The new iPhone 12 Mini and the iPhone 12 Pro Max will go on sale from November 13.
