An Australian man has filmed a shark getting closer and closer to shore.

The encounter took place last week at Woodgate Beach, in Queensland's Bundaberg region.

Arron Flanders shared his excitement with Bundaberg Now, but said he didn't want to risk getting any closer and end up with a 'chomp on the leg'.

"I'm a regular fisherman and I've never seen a shark in such shallow waters," he said.

"It looked like it was around 1.5 metres long - although being on my own, I wasn't courageous enough to get in and have a closer look."

Flanders claimed he'd seen sharks at the beach previously when he was a young teenager, but said he'd not seen one in the area for more than nine years.

He said he followed the shark along the shore for about 150 metres before it turned around.

Locals speculated it may have been a hammerhead shark.
