Florida Police have released the moment they caught an alleged paedophile in a dark motel room with a young teenager.

The grandmother of a 13-year-old girl called Volusia County Sheriff's police when the Oak Hill girl didn't come home.

Detectives found one of the teen's friends, who told them she was planning to go to a motel with someone she met online and could be meeting him at a nearby store.

The Sheriff's Office said in a statement: "Deputy Royce James went to the Dollar General to look for security video, and found surveillance images of the victim at the store. An employee reported the girl said she was waiting for someone to pick her up."

When there was no trace of the girl at the store, the police officer went to motels and asked desk clerks whether they had seen the missing teen.

The 13-year-old's friend added that the man she said was meeting might have been called Tyler or a name starting with a T.

"At the third motel he checked, Deputy James noticed a guest checked in under the name Tyler Thompson, with an address out of Orlando," the police statement said.

"Deputies went to his room and knocked on the door several times before Thompson finally answered."

They went into the room, where the lights had been turned off, and found Thompson, 22, shirtless. The girl raced into the arms of Deputy James and gave him a hug.

Deputy James asked Thompson how old he was four times before he gave an answer, to which the police officer replied: "Oh you f***ed up. You f***ed up real good."

Thompson can be heard saying: "Yeah I know I f***ed up."

You can also hear someone ask on Deputy James' walkie talkie how old the suspect is and the officer said back 'too old'.

"When she was told she'd be taken somewhere to be medically cleared and interviewed, the girl asked Deputy James to stay with her. He took her to a local Department of Children and Families facility for evaluation, and then took her home," police added.

Thompson has been charged with interference with child custody and traveling to meet after using a computer to lure a child. Authorities haven't ruled out additional charges. He's been released on a $15,000 bail.
