The US House of Representatives has voted in favour of punishing Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene for pushing conspiracy theories.

The far-right politician has previously expressed doubt that a plane crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11, suggested the Parkland shooting was staged, said Jewish space lasers were to blame for California's wildfires and repeatedly said there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 US Election.

The Georgia congresswoman was also an ardent supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory that claims Donald Trump is leading a war against a Satan-worshipping cabal of paedophiles and cannibals.

Her social media accounts have also been shown to support outlandishly untrue theories about Democratic politicians and even agreed some should be shot dead.

As a result of her wild claims, the Democrat-controlled House has voted in favour of stripping Greene of her committee assignments, meaning she will no longer serve on the House budget, education and labour committees.

Her supporters rallied against the move and said it was unfair for her to be punished for comments she made before being elected to Congress.

However, there were 11 Republicans who joined Democrats in voting for the measure, with the final vote being 230-199.

Before the vote, she expressed regret in some of the things she said or posted online.

"I was allowed to believe things that weren't true and I would ask questions about them and talk about them," she said.

"And that is absolutely what I regret because if it weren't for the Facebook posts and comments that I liked in 2018, I wouldn't be standing here today and you couldn't point a finger and accuse me of anything wrong because I've lived a very good life."

She claims she has never promoted conspiracy theories after being elected into office.

"I never said any of these things since I have been elected for Congress. These were words of the past and these things do not represent me, they do not represent my district, and they do not represent my values," she said.

However during her speech, it turned from apology to finger pointing. She equated QAnon with the media and said the press is 'just as guilty' for 'presenting truth and lies, to divide us'.

Green also condemned Democrats and abortion in her speech, before explaining that she does now understand that 9/11 and school shootings are real.
