Fans of The Weeknd had said he would have swept the Grammys had he been nominated.

The singer's album After Hours is considered by many to be one of the best albums of the year.

And despite the hit single 'Blinding Lights' sitting on top of the charts for a number of weeks, he was snubbed by the award's show.

Well, following last night's ceremony, the singer's fans have come out in force, claiming he would have walked it if he'd been given the chance.

Writing on Twitter, one user said: "We all know it, 'After Hours' is the album of the year."

"Echoing these sentiments, another wrote: "Record of the year truly belonged to The Weeknd and 'Blinding Lights' should have been a Grammy award winning song."

"I'm gonna say this. If The Weeknd was actually nominated, he would have beat Folklore and Everything I Wanted FOR SURE!!!!" cried a third.

While another added: "No The Weeknd nomination is still making me upset. Man should have cleaned out at least 5 awards."

The single 'Blinding Lights' peaked at number one in 34 countries, including the United States and Canada.

It was also his first number one single in Germany for 10 weeks, the United Kingdom for eight weeks, and Australia for 11 weeks, making it his most successful single worldwide to date.

After it was announced that The Weeknd was not included in the list of nominations, singer Abel Makkonen Tesfaye took to social media to hit out at the Grammys.

Writing on social media, he said: "The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency... "

However, despite his omission from the list of nominees, it was a great night for female talent, with both Taylor Swift and Beyoncé making Grammys history at this year's ceremony.

Swift became the first female performer to win the award for album of the year three times for folklore, while Beyoncé celebrated her 28th win, making her the most decorated woman in Grammy history.

"As an artist, I believe it's my job, and all of our jobs, to reflect time and it's been such a difficult time," Beyoncé said onstage as she won best R&B performance for 'Black Parade'.

"I wanted to uplift, encourage and celebrate all the beautiful black kings and queens who have inspired me and the whole world.

"I have been working my whole life ... This is such a magical night," she added.
