Artist Collective Claims To Be Behind Mysterious Monoliths

Up until a couple of weeks ago, you heard almost nothing about monoliths.

Now, the world has seemingly gone monolith mad.

It started with one being spotted in the middle of the desert in Utah, and since then they've cropped up in Romania and California.

There have been all kinds of theories as to what's behind them, with most people naturally concluding it's either a PR stunt or the beginnings of an alien invasion.

However, an artist collective is now laying claim to the mysterious monoliths.

The Most Famous Artist has been sharing lots of monolith content on its social media channels, and when asked by followers on countless occasions 'Was it you?', the group has replied: "If by you you mean us, yes."

Founder, Matty Mo, was a little bit more coy about it though.

Mo told Mashable: "I am not able to say much because of legalities of the original installation.

"I can say we are well known for stunts of this nature and at this time we are offering authentic art objects through monoliths-as-a-service.

"I cannot issue additional images at this time but I can promise more on this in the coming days and weeks."

However, he went on to all but take credit for it, adding: "What better way to end this f*cked up year than let the world briefly think aliens made contact only to be disappointed that it's just The Most Famous Artist playing tricks again?"

The first monolith was found in Utah on 18 November during a sheep-counting operation.

The Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was assisting Utah Division of Wildlife Resource officers as they counted bighorn sheep when one of the crew spotted something out of place among the remote terrain below.

Pilot Bret Hutchings told KSL TV: "One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it.

"He was like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!' And I was like, 'what?' And he's like, 'There's this thing back there - we've got to go look at it!'"

He added: "That's been about the strangest thing that I've come across out there in all my years of flying."
