A child molester has been beaten to death by another inmate in a California prison just days after arriving in the prison on a 55-year sentence.

Andres Ayon, 19, killed 66-year-old Agustin Duran with his bare hands in the day room of Wasco prison on Saturday night.

He began beating him and didn't stop until prison guards threw a grenade containing pepper spray into the room and he finally gave up and lay on the floor.

Duran was then airlifted out of the prison to a hospital, but died of his injuries a day later. His sentence was for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14.

Ayon was taken into segregation whilst he awaits the investigation into the events and was treated himself for minor injuries sustained in the incident. Ayon began a six-year sentence on 22 June for use of a deadly weapon and second-degree robbery.

Wasco prison is home to around 4,900 inmates and is a prison that is used as a stop-gap for new inmates whilst they are evaluated mentally and physically to decide the security level necessary, as well as their requirements, before they are moved to an institution that is deemed appropriate for their needs. It was opened in 1991.

A press release from the Department of Corrections reads: "At around 7:20 p.m. Saturday, July 7, correctional officers in a dayroom on Facility B responded when inmate Andres Ayon, 19, began striking inmate Agustin Duran, 66, in the face and upper torso with his fists.

"An alarm was sounded and all inmates got down on the ground with the exception of Ayon, who continued to strike Duran. Responding staff utilized a pepper spray grenade and Ayon complied and got down on the ground in a prone position."

It has been reported that the incident that landed Duran in Wasco was not his first offence. 'Megan's Law' a law in California that tracks register sex offenders has Duran as a registered offender since 2013.

He was previously convicted of sexual battery, molesting a child with a prior conviction for a sexual offence, according to the Megan's Law website.

Just last year, in February 2017, another man convicted of sexual offences against a child was killed in the same prison.

43-year-old Jason Morris was found dead in his cell, he had been strangled. Officials launched a homicide investigation into his death
