Designer Creates Mask With Hole So You Can Drink Through It

Not sure what the WHO would think about these...

A woman has created a range of face masks with a hole designed specifically for a drinking straw. Yeah, you did read that correctly.

Artist and designer Ellen Macomber, who is based in New Orleans, has designed and produced a number of masks with bold designs and a small hole, so wearers can sip on their drink using a straw.

Like many companies working in fashion during the coronavirus outbreak, Macomber decided to switch production to creating masks, which she's flogging for $30 (£24.35) each.

Speaking to the Fast Company, Macomber said: "We're all in New Orleans, and here in New Orleans, we like to drink.

"We were thinking of doing a lip appliqué, where it would flap open and close, but you'd have to touch your face. I was like, 'Well that won't work because you have to touch your mask.'

"That's when I was like, 'Dude, we just drill a little flap, an extra layer, and you angle the straw to get in. So the hole is never completely open.'"

It will probably come as no surprise to you that Macomber was quick to tell the publication she is 'not a public health specialist', and the doesn't think they should be used as 'the de facto for Covid-19 prevention' but that they do 'respond to an important niche'.

She added: "Anything is better than nothing," before explaining that these masks, which you might use to enjoy a cocktail, could be something people purchase alongside more safer and secure masks that you might wear when going out to do your shopping or exercising.

Macomber says it takes around an hour for her - or her assistant - to make the masks, meaning she's only been able to make 40 so far, but she plans on making more as soon as possible.

The masks have sold out online, with a message on the site reading: "Due to high demand this week's pre-orders are SOLD OUT!

"I will be updating the availability of the face masks at the beginning of each week. I am also working on masks with no straw holes and cotton basic masks.

"High end couture wearable art face masks are also in the works. Please be patient with me as production during this time is extremely difficult. Thanks guys."
