Manchester United captain and England defender Harry Maguire has been found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and attempted of bribery in Greece.

The footballer has been handed a prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days, suspended for three years.

The 27-year-old was convicted of all the charges that were against him by a court on the Greek island of Syros, following an incident last week in Mykonos.

The trial went ahead in his absence as well as the other people that were arrested, including his brother, Joe, and a friend named Christopher Sharman.

According to Sky News, a fight broke out while they were on holiday over claims that his sister was injected with a suspected 'rape drug'.

Maguire said in a statement after the verdict: "Following the hearing today, I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing.

"I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter, if anything myself, family and friends are the victims."

A statement from his club read: "Manchester United notes the verdict of the Greek court today. Harry Maguire pleaded not guilty to all of the misdemeanour charges made against him and he continues to strongly assert his innocence.

"It should be noted that the prosecution confirmed the charges and provided their evidence late on the day before the trial, giving the defence team minimal time to digest them and prepare. A request for the case to be adjourned was subsequently denied.

"On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire's legal team will now appeal the verdict, to allow a full and fair hearing at a later date."

During the trial Maguire's lawyer, Alexis Anagnostakis, told the court the events came after Maguire's sister Daisy was injected with a substance by a group of Albanians and she immediately fainted.

Speaking outside court earlier today, a lawyer assisting the prosecution case said: "When you're a sportsman and a role model you have to accept what you've done and say sorry.

"Until today, we haven't had that - they have said it's all the fault of the policeman. This was not accepted by the court. The victims and the policeman were assaulted. The only thing they want is an apology."

Earlier today, it was announced that Maguire has made it into the England squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Iceland and Denmark.

England will return to action on September 5 against Iceland and then September 8 against Denmark.

They haven't played since November 2019 when they ran out 4-0 winners over Kosovo in their final Euro 2020 qualifier.
