WARNING: POTENTIALLY DISTRESSING FOOTAGE

Watch the moment a police officer saved a three-week-old baby from choking as her helpless mum fell to the ground:

The footage, shared by Sterling Heights Police, shows how officer Cameron Maciejewski stays calm and collected as he is faced with the understandably frantic family.

After pulling up at the family's home, the police officer rushed to the family's aid, holding up the three-week-old baby girl who wasn't breathing.

He took her in his arms and checked her airways before performing back thrusts in an attempt to clear any blockages.

According to FOX News, the youngster coughed up the obstruction and began to cry - much to her mother's delight, as she dropped to the ground in relief.

In a statement, the Sterling Heights Police Department said: "If it wasn't for Officer Maciejewski's quick, calm, lifesaving actions, the outcome of this incident could have been tragically different.

"Not only did the officer save the baby, but the officer did an outstanding job consoling the family."

Cops were called to the home just before 11pm on Thursday (9 July). As the cruiser pulled up outside the property, a number of people rushed outside.

In the clip, Officer Maciejewski can be heard asking the group: "Hey, what's going on with the baby?" He is met with cries from the baby's highly distressed mum.

After requesting that she calms down, he then asks to see the baby before getting to work.

He goes on to turn the infant around and after some back thrusts, the little girl starts to cry as Maciejewski reassures the relatives that she's OK.

He can be heard saying: "Yeah, she's breathing. She was crying a minute ago. Yeah she's okay. She's got a pulse and she's breathing okay."

According to MailOnline, more emergency services arrived to check the baby over, which is when they learned that she was just three weeks old and had started to choke on her milk.

It's reported that the baby was taken to a local hospital by the Sterling Heights Fire Department for further checks.

Well done, Officer Maciejewski.
