President Joe Biden has said he will focus on gun 'problems' during his first televised press conference.

The POTUS said he had put 'all his focus' on dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and the economic impact of that, but added that he will now be looking at other addressing other issues the country faces, including gun control.

He then added: "The other problems we're talking about, immigration, the guns and the other things you mentioned, are long term problems that have been around a long time.

"And what we're going to be able to do, God willing, is now begin one at a time to focus on those as well.

"And whether it's immigration or guns or a number of other problems that have faced the country - but the fundamental problem is getting people some peace of mind.

"So they can go to bed at night and not stare at the ceiling wondering whether they lost their health insurance, whether they're going to lose a family member, whether they're going to be in a position where they're going to lose their home because they can't pay their mortgage, or the millions of people who are going to get thrown out of their homes because of their inability to pay their rent."

Speaking before the conference, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said: "Putting in place common sense gun safety measures has been a passion of the President's since he was in the Senate.

"We are certainly considering a range of levers, including working through legislation, including executive actions to address, obviously, you know, not just gun safety measures but violence in communities. So that is - has been under discussion and will continue to be under discussion."

Earlier this week, in the wake of the Colorado mass shooting that saw 10 people killed, Biden called for a ban on assault rifles.

He said: "I don't need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common-sense steps that will save lives in the future.

"This is not and should not be a partisan issue... this is an American issue. It will save lives, American lives. We have to act.

"We can ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines in this country once again."
