A man wearing an explosive suicide belt has been shot down on the outskirts of Barcelona.

The man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed by police, was shot in Subirats, a suburb to the west of the second largest Spanish city.

Some local media are reporting that it is terrorist attack suspect Younes Abouyaaqoub who has been gunned down.

Catalonia Police posted a series of tweets in relation to Monday's incident - no names were given.

The first read: "16.59pm. We receive notice of a suspicious person present at #Subirats and a police device is activated that is still underway."

The second confirmed the shooting, adding: "The suspect #Subirats is wearing a belt of explosives attached to the body. The individual has been shot dead."

A third said: "The person suspected of #Subirats 17:05 has been attached to the body which looks like a belt of explosives. The individual has been killed."

Abouyaaqoub is the suspect that Spanish police were hunting after the attack on Las Ramblas in the city centre on Thursday.

It was thought that he may have crossed the border into France and authorities warned the public that he was dangerous and could be armed.

Thursday's terrorist attack saw 15 people killed, with dozens more injured, as two men drove a white van down one of Barcelona's most popular tourist destinations.

Media reports quoting police sources said the man targeted in Subirats shouted 'Allahu Akbar' ('God is Greatest') when confronted.

The incident is believed to have taken place some 25 miles west of where Thursday's attacks happened.
