Nicola Sturgeon has urged Scots to 'minimise your social mixing' and only socialise with up to two other households either side of Christmas.

Scotland's First Minister stressed she was 'not asking anyone to cancel Christmas', but advised people to limit their socialising either side of the holiday.

Setting out the guidance, Ms Sturgeon said: "Turning to Christmas Day specifically, or Christmas Eve or Boxing Day or whenever you have your main family celebration, we are not asking you to cancel or change your plans, and we are not proposing limits on the size of household gatherings."

She added: "My key request today is this: before and immediately after Christmas, please minimise your social mixing with other households as much as you can."

This comes after Prime Minster Boris Johnson announced the booster jab programme would be accelerated in light of a surge of new Omicron infections - with everyone over the age of 18 to be offered a booster by the end of the month.

NHS England said 418,000 booster jabs were delivered on Monday, including 185,000 at community pharmacies.

Dr Emily Lawson, head of the NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme, said: "As part of the national mission to protect the country from the new Omicron variant, NHS staff and volunteers are pulling out the stops to jab as many people as possible at speed with more vaccine sites jabbing than ever before.

"The data is clear - boosters offer critical protection against the new variant and so it has never been more important to come forward and book your slot to guarantee that you get that lifesaving jab."

Warning that people 'must take Omicron extremely seriously,' Sturgeon said it was 'not a choice between protecting health and protecting the economy'.

In a Covid-19 statement to Holyrood, she said she believed speeding up the vaccine booster programme 'will not be sufficient' and that further restrictions are now required to stop the spread of the virus.

She said: "Just as vaccines started to win this race, the virus learned to run faster.

"That means we must deliver boosters even faster.

"This is all the more important in light of early data telling us that the protection we have against Omicron infection with just one or two doses is significantly lower than it is for Delta, we need a booster jab to ensure a substantial level of protection against Omicron.

"So we are taking steps now to get boosters into arms faster.

"Getting fully vaccinated is the best thing any of us can do to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and the country. So please, book your booster jag as soon as possible."

Sturgeon said Omicron cases are 'increasing exponentially - faster than any variant that has gone before it'.

In a statement to the Scottish Parliament about Covid-19, she said two people who are known to be infected with the variant have now been admitted to hospital in Scotland.
