The ex-Soviet state has introduced tougher laws towards all men found guilty of child sex offences.

Chemical castration involves a regular injection and will continue even after long jail sentences are served.

One paedophile said on TV: "I know it's harmful to my body.

"I know it will affect my health in future."

A second added: "Now I am sorry I committed such a crime."

This media campaign is designed by authorities to strike an element of fear to any potential male sex offenders who are considering to commit such crimes.

Another convict pleaded: "By my example I want to show men they should not commit such terrible offences.

"I beg those who prescribed me chemical castration - cancel your decision.

"I am still very young."

A prisoner named Marat, guilty of a rape attempt on a minor, told how he had had three castration injections so far at a penal colony in Shymkent, which stop him getting erections.

"Everything is really bad in terms of my man's health," he said.

"I need a sexual life yet nothing works down there.

"Why castrate me? I admit I'm guilty.

"But I want to live further. I still have my family and children."

He was jailed for 15 years for the attempted rape of a child.

Lastly, a convicted paedophile, aged 50, found guilty of raping a schoolgirl, 14, was reportedly in tears.

He said in his strict-regime penal colony: "They have sentenced me to 17 years."

Kazakhstan believes that its approach has led to a 15 percent fall in attacks on children, though statistics for paedophile offences have risen, possibly due to higher reporting levels.

A nurse and grandmother tasked with castrating paedophiles in one Kazakh jail claims the West should also follow the ex-Soviet state's example.

Prison hospital worker, Zoya Manaenko, 69, insists it is right that child sex attackers should face this ultimate punishment.

She said: "These people need to be stopped somehow."

"They commit terrible crimes against children. So it is right that the law allows this."

But the castration laws only apply to those convicted after the laws came into effect.

Kazakhstan's no tolerance policy includes publishing pictures, names and addresses of all child sex attackers after their release from jail.

Magzhan Yesimbek, deputy head of one penal colony, said that he had more than 100 paedophiles in his prison but only three had been castrated under the law.

Some 30 were due for release this year, but because their offences were committed earlier, they have not been castrated.
