The picturesque island of Palawan in The Philippines has been named the best island in the world. Take a look at this tourism video and make up your own mind.

While we're all sat here wondering when the next time we'll be able to head to the sunshine on holiday will be, it might be nice to take in some pictures of this idyllic island getaway in South Asia, if only for a piece of pure escapism.

Palawan was declared the best island in the world to visit by readers of Travel + Leisure as part of their 'World's Best Awards 2020'.

It's not the first time the island has taken this crown, and it probably won't be the last either.

The readers took into account the scenery, activities, beaches, food, attractions and general friendliness, and Palawan has come out on top.

It scored 94.83 out of 100, which sounds like a pretty good score, overall. Taking a quick look at the photos, it's not hard to see why people love it so much.

I mean, look at it.

Palawan is an island that is 270 miles long and just 25 miles across at the widest point, so large enough to get lost in, but small enough to feel like you can see most of it comfortably.

It's jam-packed full of wonderful beaches, secluded coves, and luxury resorts, making it the perfect place for a relaxing holiday.

Remember them? They were great, weren't they?

Travel + Leisure writes of the Filipino island: "On a map Palawan looks like an arm extending from the Philippines to Borneo.

"Though it's difficult to reach from many parts of the world, once travellers get there they can dive in World War II wrecks, explore old-growth rain forests, and paddle one of the world's longest subterranean rivers at Puerto Princesa."

One reader also said: "The landscape and scenery are just gorgeous. It offers the most beautiful beaches, resorts, and scenery anywhere."

Naturally, the government of The Philippines are pretty chuffed that their wee island has been named the most desirable in the world.

The Department of Tourism shared a post to Facebook in which they said: "The Department of Tourism (DOT) today celebrates the hailing of Palawan as it reclaims the Best Island in the World title by renowned travel publication, Travel + Leisure."

Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat added: "Palawan reclaimed its rightful place in the World's Best Awards. The citation as the Best Island in the World is all the more important because this is voted upon by the readers of the prominent Travel + Leisure (T+L) magazine.

"It's wonderful to see that our rehabilitation and sustainable development efforts last year, especially in El Nido and Coron, were well-received by tourists everywhere."
