Police in New York have arrested a man in connection with the unprovoked assault on actor Rick Moranis last month.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) did not identify Moranis at the time, but as news of the incident spread, the star's representative Troy Bailey confirmed he had been attacked.

Now police have confirmed that a suspect has been found, as a 35-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in New York.

The suspect was spotted by transit officers in the subway near 72nd and Broadway, a few blocks from where the 1 October attack took place at Central Park West.

The New York Police Department said in a tweet: "Thanks to an eagle-eyed sergeant from @NYPDTransit, this suspect has been apprehended and charged."

Another tweet from the NYPD Transit account added: "The high-profile nature of this incident had little bearing on Sergeant Dennis & PO Merlino's determination to catch the assailant, it was simply another case of NYC cops looking out for their fellow New Yorkers.

"The 35-year-old suspect now faces his 7th assault charge this year."

Police said the suspect was apprehended and later arrested on suspicion of assault in the second degree, which includes allegations that he had 'intent to cause serious physical injury to another person'.

Footage of the attack was released by police, which showed Moranis walking down the street, before another man approaches and punches him.

Moranis' rep said at the time: "He is fine but grateful for everyone's thoughts and well wishes."

In the wake of the incident, the NYPD issues a plea to the public to help track down the suspect, who was still at large.

A statement said: "The New York City Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in ascertaining the whereabouts of the unidentified male who is seen in the attached surveillance video and is being sought in connection with a random unprovoked assault which occurred within the confines of the 20 Precinct.

"Details are as follows: It was reported to police that on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 0724 hours, a 67-year-old male victim was walking southbound on Central Park West in the vicinity of West 70th Street, when an unidentified male struck him in the head with a closed fist, knocking the victim to the ground.

"The unidentified male then fled northbound on foot. The victim suffered from pain to the head, back, and right hip and travelled by private means to an area hospital for evaluation, before reporting the incident to police at the 20th Precinct."
