A policeman who investigated a hit-and-run found that the victim was his own mother, reports Manchester Evening News..

Rob Smythe, of Greater Manchester Police, was told at the scene of the collision in Stretford that his mother, Susan, had been killed after sustaining mass injuries.

Susan Smythe, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene at the junction of Chester Road and Green Street on September 9th.

A man was later arrested and charged.

"Susan was born in Old Trafford and lived in the area her whole life, surrounded by her brothers and sisters who she loved to see regularly," her family said over the weekend.

"She worked part time with one of her sisters as a barmaid at the Trafford Social Club and liked to socialise locally with both her brothers and sisters, and also with her friends.

"She often visited Stretford Mall either to do her shopping or just to meet up with some of her many friends.

"We are absolutely devastated by her death and will miss her greatly. We are appealing to anyone who witnessed what happened to please contact police."

On the MEN Facebook post, the top comment is from Rob's mate, Kieran, who is getting married next week. Rob will remain as best man.

An incredibly sad piece of new to report.
