Earlier today, a number of people were stabbed in a terrorist attack on London Bridge.

Police confirmed that the suspect - who was wearing a hoax bomb vest - was shot dead at the scene.

Almost as soon as the attack unfolded, videos emerged on social media of members of the public assisting police in detaining the man. In one clip, a man in a suit can be seen running away from the scene with a large blade in his hand.

One witness said that taking the weapon from the scene wasn't all the man did.

According to The Mirror, the witness said: "This man was walking behind us on the other side of London Bridge when the attack began.

"He ran through traffic and jumped the central partition to tackle the attacker with several others. We ran away but looks like he disarmed him. Amazing bravery."

A witness said this man ran through traffic to help.

Since the clip started doing the rounds on social media, praise for the man's heroic deeds have been pouring in.

One person said: "What a top man he is. If this account of what happened is accurate, the man needs a medal!"

Another said: "To the man in the jacket who took away the knife .. WELL DONE you are what makes Great Britian great! .. when we find who this man is .. buy him drink all night."

A third added: "This is a member of the public holding a knife the attacker had. All members of the public who restrained the attacker on London Bridge are heroes."

Another added: "Give this guy a medal..............we all owe you a Pint too! You should never have to pay for another drink my friend!!!"

The man in the suit wasn't the only civilian hero involved in stopping the suspect. Other footage on social media shows a civilian helping to pin down the man just before two shots were fired at him.

Forensic teams have been on the scene.

Speaking to the press, Met Police assistant commissioner, Neil Basu, said police were keeping an open mind about the suspect's motive.

He said: "I can confirm at approximately 14:00 GMT today police were called to a stabbing at a premises near to London Bridge.

"A male suspect was shot by specialist armed officers from City of London Police and I can confirm that this suspect died at the scene.

"I can confirm at this time we believe a device that was strapped to the body of the suspect is a hoax explosive device.

"We retain an open mind as to any motive. It would be inappropriate to speculate further at this time."
