Sucks to be an O2 customer right now, as the network has been experiencing problems that left millions without data access yesterday as a result of 'faulty software'.

In a bid to soften the blow, Sky Mobile, which piggybacks on the mobile network, is giving its customers a day's worth of free data on 8 December.

That means tomorrow Sky Mobile users can stream, upload and download on their phone to their heart's content, without facing an anxiety-inducing bill at the end of it.

This announcement comes following the outage, which left millions without 4G access for nearly 24 hours. That's 24 hours where people had to keep themselves entertained - how in the world did they communicate with their friends? Smoke signals? Homing pigeons? We can only imagine how isolated they must've felt.

And the outage came as a double blow when users discovered they were unable to send text messages in the early hours of this morning.

The Sun reports that following a statement made at 3.30am by O2, which said its 4G network was back up and running, a 'small proportion' of users were unable to send texts.

An O2 spokesperson said: "A small proportion of customers have reported issues sending text messages.

"We can see that the vast majority are being sent and received successfully and our technical teams are investigating. Our 3G and 4G data services are performing as normal."

Yesterday, O2 boss, Mark Evans, issued an apology on behalf of the company.

He said: "I want to let our customers know how sorry I am for the impact our network data issue has had on them, and reassure them that our teams, together with Ericsson, are doing everything we can.

"We will continue to work with Ericsson, through the night, who have assured us that a full service will be restored for customers by the morning. We fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry."

While customers wait to find out how (or should we say, if) O2 compensates them for their traumatic ordeal, Sky Mobile has swooped in to save the day with its offer of free data tomorrow. Hero of the year?

A Sky spokesperson announced: "We're really sorry for the issues you experienced on Sky Mobile yesterday.

"We're giving you a day of free unlimited UK data this Saturday December 8, so you can catch up on all the things you've missed. You don't need to do a thing."
