Survey Names Vienna As The 'Most Liveable' City In The World

The survey took in several things about 140 cities around the world and tried to decide which one is the best to live in

The Austrian capital city, Vienna, has been named as the world's most liveable city after a survey. This year, Vienna became the first European city to take the plaudits, shoving last year's winner Melbourne down into second place.

It beat some big names, as well. London and New York didn't even make the top 40 - which may or may not come as a surprise to anyone who has lived in either - and cities in Japan, Canada, and Australia, where the 'liveability' is usually thought to be pretty high, couldn't keep up with Vienna.

The study also found - which also won't come as a massive surprise - that Damascus, the capital city of Syria, is the least liveable city in the world.

The survey took in several things about 140 cities around the world and tried to decide which one is the best to live in. It was conducted by the Economics Intelligence Unit and is called the Global Liveability Ranking 2018.

Right, so how do they even begin to go about deciding this?

The factors they take into account are: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Sitting in behind Vienna and Melbourne are Osaka, Japan, Calgary, in Canada, and Australia's largest city, Sydney.

The only city that made it into the top ten from Europe was Denmark's capital, Copenhagen.

Manchester leads the way for the UK - because of course it does - sitting at number 35.

Basically, the best places on the liveability scale are Canada - they provided 3 of the top 10 - and America.

The editor of the survey, Roxana Slavcheva, said: "Globally, this has been a year of many changes.

"Not only has Vienna displaced Melbourne to become the most liveable city, but a total of 77 cities have seen a change in their liveability ratings.

"A return to relative stability, after several high-profile terrorist attacks and civil unrest incidents across much of western Europe and North America, has meant that only nine of these cities have registered a decline in this period."

Down at the other end of the scale, cities in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia account for the lowest ranked ten cities.

Violence, crime, instability, and war are factors that see them ranked as 'less liveable'.

Also featured in the bottom ten are Lagos in Nigeria, Dhaka - the capital of Bangladesh - and, perhaps surprisingly, Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby.
