An eyewitness called Veronica Durango told CNN: "[The driver] put his foot on the gas and ran through the crowd. He came from Olof Palmes Street and drove down to Drottninggatan. It was like he was driving through paper. It's like it was nothing. I can't even believe how a person could do such a thing. And then he just kept on going. I was in shock."
It is being treated as a terrorist attack. "Sweden has been attacked. Everything points to a terrorist act," the Swedish prime minister, Stefan Löfven, said shortly after the news broke.
An eyewitness told local news Aftonbladet: "I saw hundreds of people run, they ran for their lives.
"I turned and ran as well."
