It's fairly common practice for the police to use specialist sniffer dogs to track down a suspect, but a bizarre case in America over the weekend proved that it doesn't always go quite as expected.
Liberty Police Department, Missouri, were searching for a person wanted for possession of a controlled substance. And during a search of a home they believed them to be at, officers stumbled across the suspect after they farted too loudly, giving away their hiding spot.
A spokesperson for Clay County Sheriff's Office confirmed the story on the force's Facebook page.
They said: "If you've got a felony warrant for your arrest, the cops are looking for you and you pass gas so loud it gives up your hiding spot, you're definitely having a sh** day."
The force later added: "We've gotta give props to Liberty PD for using their senses to sniff him out!"
And local residents were quick to praise police for their unique policing techniques and incredible sense of humour.
One person said: "Thank you Clay County, Missouri Sheriff I have worked with a lot of them over the last 17 years and they are all great guys. Thank you for all you do."
A second wrote: "Your Department deserves an award for Post of the year and everyone involved in this incident deserves hazard pay, especially that poor Dog. Thanks your entire Department of Brave First Responders."
A third follower put: " I never laughed out loud so much in my life. It took my 20 minutes to tell my husband what was so funny and now he can't stop laughing, by the way he's a retired OHP officer. I love you guy."
"Some police officers just have a "Nose" for catching criminals like him. One case where a K9 was not necessary to sniff out the bad guy", joked another.
This unfortunate ending comes a few weeks after footage emerged of another suspect falling through the ceiling of a house, right on to the police officers trying to find him.
The suspect was reportedly hiding from police in the attic of a house, but stepped on a weak spot in the ceiling and fell through, with his leg dangling above one of the officers who was looking for him.
