Indonesian authorities can now sentence paedophiles to be executed or chemically castrated.

This comes after a case regarding the brutal gang rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl caused uproar in the country. The victim, a girl named Yuyun, came from a small village called Sumatra.

Half of her attackers were sentenced to ten years in prison. However, this sparked a national outrage as many thought the punishment didn't fit the crime and that the murderers deserved more time behind bars.

At the time, Indonesian president, Joko Widodo said: "We all mourn the tragic death of Yuyun.

"[We need to] catch and severely punish the perpetrators. Women and children must be protected from violence."

President Widodo

On Wednesday, President Widodo kept his promise to protect women and children from violence by introducing this new government crack down on paedophilia.

According to the Daily Mail, judges have now been given the power to sentence paedophiles to death or order that they are chemically castrated. If you're not familiar with the process, this is a procedure that uses drugs to eliminate sex drive.

He said: "(This) will give room for judges to issue the heaviest sentence on perpetrators of sexual offences on children.

"We hope this regulation will provide a deterrent effect and bring down the number of sexual offences committed against children."
