A Republican Senator has warned that former Democratic Presidents could find themselves being impeached following Donald Trump's second impeachment.

Texas Senator John Cornyn said if Republicans take congress in the future, then previous Democratic presidents might be prosecuted.

Trump made history by becoming the first US president to be impeached twice after the Democratic-controlled House, alongside 10 Republicans, voted to charge him with the incitement of insurrection following the riots at the deadly Capitol earlier this month.

However, several Republicans have now spoken out against the trial, including Cornyn.

Tweeting Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, Cornyn wrote: "If it is a good idea to impeach and try former presidents, what about former Democratic presidents when Republicans get the majority in 2022?

"Think about it and let's do what is best for country."

Trump's trial is set to take place next month - if convicted, he could be barred from holding office again.

The former POTUS has strongly denied that his speech on 6 January, just hours before the riots, influenced those who took part.

On 6 January he told his supporters: On 6 January, Trump told his supporters: "We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we're probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you'll never take back our country with weakness.

"You have to show strength, and you have to be strong."

Later that day, rioters stormed the Capitol - many have since been arrested.

In response to the criticism about his speech, Trump said: "If you read my speech - and many people have done it and I've seen it both in the papers and in the media, on television, it is been analysed - and people thought that what I said was totally appropriate.

'They've analysed my speech and my words and my final paragraph, my final sentence and everybody to a tee thought it was totally appropriate.

"And if you look at what other people have said, politicians at a high level, about the riots during the summer, the horrible riots in Portland and Seattle and various other places, that was a real problem - what they said."
