Scottish singer Darius Campbell Danesh has tragically passed away at the age of 41.

The former Pop Idol contestant's family confirmed the news, saying he'd been found dead in his US apartment room on 11 August.

While the cause of death is currently unknown, police said there were no signs of suspicious circumstances.

"Darius was found unresponsive in bed in his apartment room in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 11 and was pronounced dead in the afternoon by the local medical examiners’ office.

"The local police department have confirmed that there were no signs of intent or suspicious circumstances.

"The cause of his sudden death is unknown at this stage while medical examinations continue.

"We ask that you kindly respect our wishes for privacy at this time whilst we come to terms with the tragic loss of our son and brother."

The 'Colourblind' singer, who was formerly known as Darius Danesh, made his first bid for fame in the ITV show Popstars in 2001.

He went on to appear on the first series of Pop Idol, bagging third place behind Will Young and Gareth Gates.

Darius later forged a successful stage career, appearing in Chicago, Guys And Dolls and Gone With The Wind, among others.

The star previously credited his former mentor and Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell for persuading him to take on the role as Billy Flynn in Chicago.

He said at the time: "I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had and all the opportunities that it opened up and to be able to call Simon Cowell a friend and to be able to have dinner with him."

In 2011 while living in the US, Darius married Canadian actress Natasha Henstridge but the pair divorced a few years later.

Tributes continue to pour in for the 'Colourblind' singer, with one fan writing on Twitter: "41 is just way too young!

"As a kid who witnessed the birth of British reality TV we know today... I loved Darius Campbell Danesh and his unique talent.

"'Colourblind' 'Rushes' 'Incredible' & 'Girl in the Moon' were all ace songs, cannot believe he's gone! RIP."

Another said: "Noooo. This is dreadfully sad. Condolences to his family and friends. Loved him on Pop Idol."

A third added: "RIP Darius Campbell Danesh. Saw him opposite Sheridan Smith on Funny Girl. His singing was impressive and better than I expected.

"Condolences to his family, friends and fans."
