Tiger Woods is 'awake, responsive and recovering' at hospital after being involved in a car crash on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old golfer sustained injuries to his lower right leg and ankle, but it could have been a lot worse with Californian police saying he was lucky to survive the smash.

A statement shared on Woods' official Twitter page thanks fans for their 'overwhelming support and messages during this tough time'.

It goes on to say he was in a single car accident and had to undergo a 'long surgical procedure' after going to hospital.

The statement contains an update from Anish Mahajan, MD, chief medical officer and interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre about Woods' condition.

Mahajan said: "Mr Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre, a level 1 trauma centre.

"Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia.

"Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilised with a combination of screws and pins.

"Trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

The post also thanks medical staff, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and the fire department.

The statement ends by once again thanking people for their support and well-wishes while requesting privacy for Woods.

In a statement from Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office, it was revealed Woods was cut out of the vehicle with the 'jaws of life' by firefighters and paramedics before being rushed to hospital by ambulance.

The statement read in part: "The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods."

It continued: "Mr. Woods was extricated from the wreck with the 'jaws of life' by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries."

Police have said a traffic investigation is underway.
