AMC Theatres has said it plans to reopen 'almost all' of its UK and US cinemas in July, in time for the new Christopher Nolan flick Tenet.

The company, which owns Odeon Cinemas, was forced to close its theatres in March following the outbreak of coronavirus.

AMC has now revealed its plans to reopen including introducing limited capacity and 'blocked seating'.

In an earnings reports published yesterday, the company said: "In our two largest territories, we are currently planning to reopen almost all of our US and UK theatres in July, to be positioned to showcase Warner Bros' release of Christopher Nolan's Tenet now slated for release on July 17th followed by Disney's Mulan now slated for release on July 24th."

It goes on to say it has a 'robust slate' for the rest of 2020, with films such as A Quiet Place 2, Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow all tipped for release.

However, following its recent falling out with Universal Pictures after the success of its video on-demand release of Trolls World Tour, the report adds: "While we are in active dialogue with Universal, no movies made by Universal Studios are currently on our docket."

The report explains that AMC will be consulting with Harvard University School of Public Health to seek guidance on 'on how best to create a safe environment for our guests and associations'.

The company said that it is planning: "Personal protection equipment, cleaning protocols, limited theatre capacity, blocked seating and other strategies."

AMC has already reopened 10 of its cinemas in in Norway, Germany, Spain and Portugal and expect to be able to reopen globally in July.

Adam Aron, CEO and President of AMC said in the report: "Our top priorities remain the safety and well-being of our guests and associates, combined with our taking sweeping actions to preserve the long term viability of AMC Entertainment."

Adding: "We are confident we are taking the necessary steps on a broad array of fronts to ensure AMC's future success as we navigate these turbulent and uncertain times."

Last month, Cineworld revealed it will be reopening all its cinemas in July.

In a statement to investors it said: "Cineworld currently anticipates that government restrictions related to cinemas will be lifted in each of its territories by July.

"Subject to this and confirmation of the schedule for film releases, Cineworld anticipates the reopening of all of its cinemas in July. Cineworld has put in place procedures to ensure a safe and enjoyable cinema experience for its employees and customers."
