Netflix has dropped the trailer for its latest foray into the world of true crime. Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez tells the story of the former NFL star who was convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd, in 2013, before taking his own life while in prison.

The three-part mini-series will follow the trial of the former New England Patriots tight-end, his conviction and subsequent suicide - featuring news coverage from the time, old photos and videos from Hernandez's childhood, as well as interviews with people who knew the American football star throughout his life.

The tense trailer opens with an interviewee saying: "No one has allegedly murdered two people and then played an entire season as a professional athlete."

It then moves on to old footage of Hernandez from his high school days, showing comments from numerous people complimenting his footballing prowess.

But as the trailer goes on, it quickly becomes clear that everything was not as it seemed. Others interviewees claim Hernandez was prone to violent outbursts and mood changes, and that he grew up in a violent household.

Speaking to his mother on the phone while in prison, Hernandez can then be heard saying: "I was the happiest little kid in the world and you f***ed me up."

She replies with: "'I ain't living with that."

Hernandez then shouts: "You did! I had nobody. What you think I was gonna do? Become a perfect angel?"

The focus of the documentary is to find out how someone like Hernandez who, seemingly, had the world at his feet, could become embroiled in a murder investigation and take his own life?

Hernandez was convicted of the murder of future brother-in-law Odin Lloyd, shooting him on 17 June 2013. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The former athlete was also tried for the 2012 double murder of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, but was acquitted.

On 19 April 2017, Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell after apparently hanging himself with a bedsheet.

Before taking his own life, he had lodged an appeal against his conviction. By taking his own life before the appeal had been completed, Hernandez's murder conviction was vacated, which technically meant he was presumed innocent.

The family of Odin Loyd appealed the court's decision and it was overturned, reinstating his original murder conviction.

Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez will be available to stream on Netflix from 15 January.
