After a long wait, Lucifer fans finally got the chance to see season five after it landed on our screens earlier this month.

But with most having binged part one and the finale of the series still to be filmed due to delays caused by Covid-19, many have been left wondering when part two will finally reach them.

Well, the show's lead, Tom Ellis, has revealed that he expects the next instalment of the series to land by the New Year.

Speaking to the Pilot TV podcast, the 41-year-old said: "The second eight episodes, I'm not sure when they're going to drop because we've still got the finale.

"We were about halfway through it. So we go back, we start with that, and then we go straight into season six.

"So hopefully that'll be ready to go, I would imagine, sort of Christmastime or early next year."

Part one of series five has landed on Netflix.

For those who haven't seen it, Lucifer is a fantasy-drama that centres on Lucifer Morningstar, or the Devil, who sacks off Hell and moves to Los Angeles to run a nightclub, before going on to become a consultant for the LAPD.

Season five had previously been billed as the show's final instalment, but after Lucifer fans clamoured for another outing, it was saved... again, and will be back for a sixth time at some point.

The show originally aired on Fox, but it was cancelled after just three seasons. That's when Netflix swooped it up and took it off Fox's hands, which came as great news to loyal Lucifer heads.

After the news broke, Ildy Modrovich and fellow producer Joe Henderson thanked the streaming site and the show's fans for giving them another chance to end the series as they had wanted.

They said: "We are so incredibly thankful to Netflix for resurrecting our show last season, and now letting us finish the story of Lucifer on our terms.

"Most importantly, we want to thank the fans for their incredible passion and support. The best is yet to come!"

Some fans had previously claimed season five would be Ellis' last hurrah as the titular character, with one site even suggesting he was going to be replaced by Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder for a sixth season.

Like many fan theories, however, this was absolute tosh and Ellis is here until the end.

Speaking to The Guardian, Ellis admitted he had come to terms with the fifth series being his last, until he was called and asked to do another.

He said: "I'd planned to spend this season in my own grieving process. And then, right towards the end, literally as we'd already devised how we would end our show, we had a call from Netflix saying: 'Would you like to go another season?'."

Adding: "I know we're the Lazarus of TV shows, but this is definitely going to be the final season."
