The History Channel's popular Vikings saga is heading to Netflix next year, with a brand new, 24-episode series titled Vikings: Valhalla.

The sixth and final series of the historical epic is set to premiere on History on 4 December, but Netflix announced on Tuesday that the series is set to return on streaming services sometime next year with a brand new sequel set 100 years after the original.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Vikings: Valhalla will take place 100 years after the original series, telling the story of famous Vikings such as Leif Erikson, Freydis, Harald Harada and even William the Conqueror.

The original Vikings series ran from 2013 to 2019.

Much of the Vikings team is set to return on the new show, with much of the production and filming also returning to Ireland. Show creator Michael Hirst has also reportedly hand-picked Jeb Stuart as producer - he has previously worked on iconic films such as Die Hard and The Fugitive.

Hirst said in a statement: "I am beyond excited that we are announcing the continuation of our Vikings saga.

"I know that the millions of our fans across the globe will be thrilled by the belief being shown in our show by MGM and Netflix. Jeb Stuart, a truly wonderful writer, will bring new storylines and a powerful visceral vision to stories about some of the most famous Vikings known to history."

The move to Netflix has come as a surprise to many, considering that Hulu currently owns the rights to the flagship History Channel show. However, the show comes with a built-in fanbase and a settled writing and production team, which could make it a savvy aquisition for Netflix as it faces increased competition in the streaming arena from Disney+, Apple TV and Amazon.

A spokesman for Netflix said on Tuesday that: "Vikings: Valhalla promises to be everything that fans love about the franchise: heart-pounding, unstoppable action rooted in rich characters and dramatic storytelling that shines the light on family, loyalty and power. We are thrilled to bring the next iteration of the Vikings saga to life with Michael Hirst, Jeb Stuart, Morgan O'Sullivan and MGM Television."
