A fundraising attempt, set up by a man who tragically died while running this year's London Marathon, has now topped £200,000 in donations.

Matt Campbell, a professional chef who had previously been a contestant on Masterchef, collapsed 3.7 miles from the end of the course.

Matt was an experienced runner, having completed the Manchester Marathon in under three hours just weeks before attempting the London Marathon.

His JustGiving page, which was set up before he ran both marathons, has now passed £200,000 after people came together to run 3.7 miles in Matt's honour. Runners began sharing images of themselves completing the distance, using the hashtag #FinishForMatt.

"I can't put into words how saddened I was to hear about the loss of a fellow runner. I ran 3.7 miles in memory of Matt," wrote Sally Rothwell, who donated to his page.

"Ran my 3.7 miles at the gym this morning. I thought about Matt the whole time I was running," added Caroline Suttie.

Matt was running for the Brathay Trust, a youth charity with the motto, 'Inspiring young people to make positive changes'. He was running in memory of his father, who passed away a year and a half ago.

He had posted to social media about his pride in attempting the marathon for the charity. "Words can't describe how honoured and humbled I feel to be asked to run this year's @londonmarathon on behalf of @brathaychallenges/@brathaytrust and in memory of my Father, Martin Campbell," Matt wrote.

"It's been almost 18 months since I lost my dad and this has been the most challenging period of my life. One thing that has helped me immensely is running and he inspired me to undertake my first marathon (Brathay) in 2016.

"I would never have believed two years on I would have the opportunity to represent such an incredible charity at such a prestigious event. Fundraising for Brathay with the proceeds going towards their memorial appeal in my father's name."

Martin Campbell, Matt's father, had a long-standing involvement with the Brathay Trust. The charity is headquartered in the town of Brathay, Cumbria, where it was founded in 1946.

It seeks to help young people to gain skills and develop themselves, with a particular focus on helping them to experience the local Lake District via team-building. They have organised their own marathon around Windermere, England's largest lake, since 1982.

RIP Matt.
