Britain’s richest artist gives girlfriend bizarre birthday cake of unborn child

Well, it's certainly one way to make a statement

Let’s not lie, rich people often buy some rather interesting things.

I mean, I guess if you have that much money you can splash out on less than usual items.

And this rich bloke decided to buy a somewhat bizarre birthday cake for his girlfriend.

Damien Hirst, 58, is reportedly the UK’s richest living artist whose art is well known to have death as a central theme.

The Brit previously received the Turner Prize with an exhibition featuring ‘Mother and Child Divided’, which saw four tanks containing the ‘bisected and preserved halves of a cow and calf’. One of his early works of photography features him posing next to a corpse and smiling.

In the 2020 Sunday Times Rich List, Hirst’s wealth was estimated at $384million (£304million).

The artist and his girlfriend, Sophie Cannell are currently expecting their first child together.

And the dad-of-three seemed to put his artistry into the cake for Cannell’s 30th birthday as it was designed to be their unborn child.

Hirst presented the former ballet dancer with the mega cake shaped like her pregnant body with the large unborn baby inside.

And yep, it even featured detailing of Cannell’s insides to make it even more realistic.

It’s said this unique birthday cake is inspired by Hirst’s piece ‘The Miraculous Journey’, which is a series of giant bronze sculptures depicting the development of a foetus in the womb. Because what woman doesn’t want to blow candles out over that on their 30th birthday?

The pair took to Las Vegas to celebrate after last year’s birthday saw the artist gift her over 20 presents wrapped up in pink paper.

Since Cannell announced her pregnancy with a baby bump photo back in November, Hirst has not commented publicly about it.

However, he did recently share some NFT artwork of pregnancy emojis – so I guess that’s kind of the same in this day.

The pair have been dating for at least three years now, and it was previously reported they met when she was working as a waiter at a luxury London restaurant.

Last March, the artist immortalised Cannell when he created a sculpture based on her body for a Mayfair restaurant.

He’s given her a variety of extravagant gifts before though, like a £166,600 18-carat gold Rolex Pearlmaster with 713 gems on it.

Hirst is dad to three sons: Connor Ojala, Cassius Atticus and Cyrus Joe, who he shares with long-term ex-girlfriend, Maia Norman.
