A UK government official has issued a sobering warning suggesting the UK is the new 'number one target' for Russian interference, following an increase in 'grey zone' attacks.

Last week, three men were found guilty of an arson attack on an industrial unit, which had been storing supplies for Ukraine, on behalf of Russian private army the Wagner group, with the incident revealing the Kremlin's plans to target British interests through the use of indirect 'grey zone' attacks.

A government source has now warned that we could be seeing more of these in the weeks and months to come, telling The Times the UK is now Russia's 'number one' target for cyber attacks and espionage.

"It’s been really evident from Russia’s recent propaganda that we’re target No 1," the unnamed government official claimed.

According to the source, Russia's decision to bump the UK up the list of targets is likely down to Donald Trump's softer stance towards Vladimir Putin and his ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

Although the US president has appeared more critical of Putin in the last couple of weeks, his stance on Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and temporary pause of US military aid earlier in the year will be one welcomed by Moscow.

Meanwhile UK prime minister Keir Starmer has been one of the most vocal supporters of Zelenskyy. This means that key areas of UK infrastructure are now targets, with MI5 director-general Sir Ken McCallum warning there could be 'sustained mayhem on British and European streets' last year.

This is a viewpoint shared by Defence Eye author Tim Ripley, who told LADbible: "This wave of attacks, I think looking at sort of 70/80 plus across Europe over the past two years, all seem to be linked to things related to the logistic support of Ukraine.

"This is classic sabotage and diversionary forces under part of the classic GRU mission to conduct sabotage behind enemy lines."

How is the UK at risk from increased Russian interference?

According to The Times' report, cyber attacks from third parties approached by the Russian government will be a key target in disrupting UK infrastructure.

The increase prompted a review of UK defences by Secretary of State John Healey, who previously revealed to the BBC that 90,000 attacks had been launched on UK networks in the past two years.

He added that cyber attacks from Russian adversaries were taking place 'every day'.

Cyber warfare forms part of the larger 'grey zone' attacks which Russia could deploy against the UK, with 2023's arson attack being one example of this.

'Grey zone' attacks are acts of sabotage aimed at destabilising another state which fall short of open warfare.

These can include: cyber warfare, disinformation campaigns, espionage and targeted assassinations.

When it comes to stopping such attacks, Ripley said the UK could respond through both 'passive' and 'active' means. This includes securing sites which are likely to be targeted by criminals as well as utilising intelligence to intercept groups before they're able to attack.
