Queen Elizabeth II called a staff meeting for all of her servants from Royal residences across the country at Buckingham Palace this morning to announce Prince Philip will be stepping down from Royal duties, the BBC reports.

Staff were addressed by the most senior officer of the Royal household - Lord Chamberlain - and the Queen's private secretary Sir Christopher Geidt, according to the Daily Mail.

Buckingham Palace began trending on Twitter as people made guesses about what the announcement could be. With many speculating the meeting could be about Prince Philip's health.

The Prince consort is 95 years old and will officially step down in the autumn. His duties are now likely to be shared between son Charles, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.
