David Perry, the taxi driver involved in the terror attack at a hospital in Liverpool last weekend, has spoken out for the first time since the incident, having thanked the public for their 'amazing generosity'.

In a statement, Perry said he felt it was a 'miracle' that he is alive after 'such an evil act'.

He said: "On behalf of myself, Rachel and our family, we would like to say thank you to everyone for all your get well wishes and for your amazing generosity. We are completely overwhelmed with it.

"A special thanks to the staff at the Liverpool women's hospital, the staff and medical team at Aintree hospital, Merseyside Police and Counter Terrorism Policing, who have all been amazing.

"I feel like it's a miracle that I'm alive and so thankful that no one else was injured in such an evil act.

"I now need time to try to come to terms with what's happened and focus on my recovery both mentally and physically. Please be kind, be vigilant and stay safe."

Perry managed to escape with just minor injuries from the blast that killed bomber Emad Al Swealmeen when he detonated an improvised explosive device outside Liverpool Women's Hospital.

The initial blast caused the windows of the vehicle to shatter into pieces, as well as setting the vehicle on fire.

Just seconds after the initial detonation, Perry could be seen falling out of the driver's door and rushing off to safety.

Shortly after, the entire car was ablaze, with the 32-year-old Al Swealmeen inside it.

After the incident on Remembrance Sunday, Perry's wife posted on Facebook that her husband is 'lucky to be alive', describing his escape as an 'utter miracle'.

Rachel Perry thanked the public and friends for their messages of support, but said her husband was 'extremely sore and just trying to process what's happened'.

She wrote: "The explosion happened whilst he was in the car and how he managed to escape is an utter miracle.

"He certainly had some guardian angels looking after him."

Amid speculation about exactly what happened, she added: "There are a lot of rumours flying round about him being a hero and locking the passenger inside the car... but the truth of the matter is, he is without a doubt lucky to be alive."

Mrs Perry concluded: "Let's pray this doesn't happen to anyone else."
